Grateful for Blessings in Our Parish | Agradecido por las bendiciones en nuestra parroquia

Dear parish family and friends,

Gratitude is a most precious virtue.  And these days, I find myself grateful for so many blessings that God has bestowed through the hands of others.  Let me share with you three of them.

First, through your beautiful generosity, we have closed the $56,000 shortfall in the 2025 Diocesan Annual Campaign, and as of today have raised $168,333 toward our goal of $163,755 – a $4,500 overage, which will come back to our parish!  And because I believe in what this campaign supports, over the course of the next year, I will be sharing with you just how this diocesan appeal truly benefits us right here in Gettysburg in some ways that you might not have thought of, or that might even surprise you.  Thank you to all of those who have given!  I am grateful. 

Second, thank you for your support of our Parish Needs List.  Thanks to your generosity, many of the projects on our list have been fully or partially funded.  To date, cash donations total $52,400, not to mention other donations of materials and hard work.  This past week, I met with our Facilities Committee to begin planning how these projects will be carried out in the year to come. Also, forthcoming displays will show photos of the current state of those items in need of repair.  And down the road, we plan to include “after photos” to see the fruit of the work being done thanks to your generosity.  And speaking of the Facilities Committee, they tell me that the installation of our new heating and air-conditioning system at the historic church should be completed by the end of January.  I am grateful. 

Third, over the past 3 weeks, some 30 + parishioners have been rubbing shoulders (and paint brushes) at the rectory – tearing our old wall paper down, putting a fresh coat of paint on the walls, and installing new light fixtures, appliances, and curtains, among many other projects.  Fr. Pray and I totally feel like kids on Christmas morning with all the delightful surprises and blessings that we have humbly received through the efforts of so many.  And even though we get to enjoy the fruits of their labor, it was so good to see parishioners – Anglo and Hispanic, long-timers and newly-registered – getting to know one another in the process of all this work.  Oh, and we will have another open house down the road so you can see the amazing results.  We are grateful.

Querida familia parroquial y amigos,

La gratitud es una virtud muy preciada. Y en estos días, me siento agradecido por tantas bendiciones que Dios nos ha concedido a través de las manos de otros. Permítanme compartir con ustedes tres de ellas.

Primero, gracias a su generosidad, hemos cubierto el déficit de $56,000 en la Campaña Anual Diocesana de 2025, y hasta el día de hoy hemos recaudado $168,333 para nuestra meta de $163,755, un excedente de $4,500 que regresará a nuestra parroquia. Y como creo en lo que apoya esta campaña, a lo largo del próximo año, les compartiré cómo esta colecta diocesana nos beneficia aquí mismo en Gettysburg de maneras que quizás no hayan considerado o que incluso les sorprendan. ¡Gracias a todos los que han contribuido! Estoy agradecido.

Segundo, gracias por su apoyo a nuestra Lista de Necesidades Parroquiales. Gracias a su generosidad, muchos de los proyectos de nuestra lista han sido financiados total o parcialmente. Hasta la fecha, las donaciones en efectivo ascienden a $52,400, sin mencionar otras donaciones de materiales y el trabajo realizado. La semana pasada me reuní con nuestro Comité de Instalaciones para comenzar a planificar cómo se llevarán a cabo estos proyectos durante el próximo año. Además, próximamente se mostrarán fotografías del estado actual de las cosas que necesitan reparación. Y más adelante, planeamos incluir fotos del "después" para que vean el fruto del trabajo realizado gracias a su generosidad. Y hablando del Comité de Instalaciones, me informan que la instalación de nuestro nuevo sistema de calefacción y aire acondicionado en la iglesia histórica debería estar terminada a finales de enero. Estoy agradecido.

Tercero, durante las últimas 3 semanas, más de 30 feligreses han estado trabajando juntos (y con brochas de pintura) en la casa parroquial: quitando el papel tapiz viejo, pintando las paredes e instalando nuevas lámparas, electrodomésticos y cortinas, entre muchos otros proyectos. El Padre Pray y yo nos sentimos como niños en la mañana de Navidad con todas las maravillosas sorpresas y bendiciones que hemos recibido humildemente gracias al esfuerzo de tantos. Y aunque disfrutamos nosotros de los frutos de su trabajo, fue maravilloso ver a los feligreses – anglos e hispanos – conocerse entre sí durante todo este proceso. Ah, y organizaremos otra jornada de puertas abiertas más adelante para que puedan ver los increíbles resultados. Estamos muy agradecidos.

Believe God’s Truth About Us | Creemos en la verdad de Dios sobre nosotros.

Dear parish family and friends, 

Today, the universal Church celebrates the Sunday of the Word of God, established by Pope Francis as a day “devoted to the celebration, study and dissemination of the Word of God” – the Bible. The Word of God reveals the truth that sets us free – not just from sin and eternal separation from God – but also from the effects of original sin still plaguing us, such as the lies we believe about ourselves, which many times stretch back to childhood. A powerful way to experience God’s truth that sets us free is to come into agreement with who our heavenly Father says we are, as His beloved children. I invite you to pray these statements in faith:

- I am complete in Him, Who is the Head of all principality and power (Colossians 2:10).

- I am alive with Christ (Ephesians 2:5).

- I am born of God, and the evil one does not touch me (1 John 5:18).

- I am holy and without blame before Him in love (Ephesians 1:4; 1 Peter 1:16).

- I have the peace of God that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7).

- I have the Greater One living in me. Greater is He Who is in me than he who is in the world (1 John 4:4).

- I have put off the old man and have put on the new man, which is renewed in the knowledge after the image of Him Who created me (Colossians 3:9-10).

- I have no lack, for my God supplies all of my need according to His riches in glory by Jesus (Philippians 4:19).

- I can do all things through Christ Jesus, who is my strength (Philippians 4:13).

- I am a new creature in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17).

- I am more than a conqueror through Him Who loves me (Romans 8:37).

- I am an overcomer by the blood of the Lamb and the word of my testimony (Revelation 12:11).

- It is not I who live, but Christ Who lives in me (Galatians 2:20).

- I am the temple of the Holy Spirit; I am not my own (1 Corinthians 6:19).

- I am delivered from the power of darkness and transferred into God’s kingdom (Colossians 1:13).

- I am greatly loved by God (Romans 1:7; Ephesians 2:4; Colossians 3:12; 1 Thessalonians 1:4).

- I press on toward the goal to win the prize to which God in Christ Jesus is calling us upward (Philippians 3:14).

- For God has not given us a spirit of fear; but of power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7).

Also, this week is Catholic Schools Week. This annual celebration is an opportunity for Catholic schools across the country to proudly showcase our faith-based education and student success in academics, leadership, volunteerism, the arts, and athletics. In a world saturated with lies and half-truths, Catholic schools are a haven that proclaims the good news of God’s truth. We have an amazing Catholic school here at St. Francis Xavier. And I am so grateful for Mrs. Sieg and all of our teachers and staff for all their hard work to make our school the family it truly is. And in case you haven’t heard, our school is growing! Hoy, la Iglesia universal celebra el Domingo de la Palabra de Dios, establecido por el Papa Francisco como un día “dedicado a la celebración, el estudio y la difusión de la Palabra de Dios” -  la Biblia. La Palabra de Dios revela la verdad que nos libera - no solo del pecado y la separación eterna de Dios - sino también de los efectos del pecado original que aún nos afligen, como las mentiras que creemos sobre nosotros mismos, que muchas veces se remontan a la infancia. Una manera poderosa de experimentar la verdad de Dios que nos libera es aceptar lo que nuestro Padre celestial dice que somos, como sus hijos amados. Los invito a orar estas afirmaciones con fe:

- Soy completo en Él, que es la Cabeza de todo Principado y Potestad (Colosenses 2:10).

- Estoy vivo con Cristo (Efesios 2:5).

- He nacido de Dios, y el maligno no me toca (1 Juan 5:18).

- Soy santo e irreprensible delante de Él en amor (Efesios 1:4; 1 Pedro 1:16).

- Tengo la paz de Dios que sobrepasa todo entendimiento (Filipenses 4:7).

- El que es mayor vive en mí. Mayor es el que está en mí que el que está en el mundo (1 Juan 4:4).

- Me he despojado del viejo hombre y me he revestido del nuevo, el cual se renueva en el conocimiento conforme a la imagen del que me creó (Colosenses 3:9-10).

Looking Ahead at Sunday of the Word of God | De cara al Domingo de la Palabra de Dios

Next week we will be celebrating the Sunday of the Word of God. In his Apostolic Letter Aperuit illis issued on September 30, 2019, Pope Francis established that the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time is to be devoted to “celebration, study, and spreading of the Word of God.“ It is a day that invites Catholics across the world to deepen their appreciation, love, and faithful witness to God and his Word. This year, the Sunday of the Word of God falls on January 25.

According to Pope Francis, “There is one particular way of listening to what the Lord wishes to tell us in his word and of letting ourselves be transformed by the Spirit. We must listen to God’s word, and then, in the moments that follow, ask ‘Lord, what does this text say to me? What is it about my life that you want to change by this text? What troubles me about this text? Or perhaps: What do I find pleasant in this text? What is it about this word that moves me?’”

This year’s theme for the Sunday of the Word of God is “The word of Christ dwells among you.” The word “dwell” means to live or reside; it carries a suggestion of relationship rather than fleeting moments of encounter. It is a beautiful thing to hear the Word of God proclaimed at Mass, but do we revisit the Sunday Scriptures on our own time, allowing the Holy Spirit to use them to shape our lives? To know Christ, we must know His Word. If we consume the Word of God daily, we will find that it has the power to transform our lives.

The second part of this year’s theme is “among you.” When we find ourselves drawing peace, wisdom,\ and courage from the Word of God we will be able to share it with those we encounter every day. The better we know the Word of God, the better equipped we will be to reflect Christ to our brothers and sisters. We can pass along the comfort we have found and give a ready answer to the challenges that are sure to come.

Lent begins on February 18, and we all know that during Lent we are called to prayer, fasting, and abstinence. Perhaps this Lent we can find time outside of Mass to pray with the Scriptures. A good place to start with the Word of God is with the Sunday readings. Perhaps read them before attending Mass and then again after Mass considering what you have heard in the homily. Ascension Press has a wonderful resource called Sundays with Ascension with homilies and podcasts. Resources can also be found on the website of The United States Council of Catholic Bishops at usccb.org. Both resources will even have content sent directly to your email inbox. Whatever you choose to do, simply step forward in faith and allow the Holy Spirit to guide you and reveal to you the wonders of the Word of God.

La próxima semana celebraremos el Domingo de la Palabra de Dios. En su Carta Apostólica Aperuit illis, publicada el 30 de septiembre de 2019, el Papa Francisco estableció que el Tercer Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario se dedicará a la “celebración, el estudio y la difusión de la Palabra de Dios”. Es un día que invita a los católicos de todo el mundo a profundizar su aprecio, amor y testimonio fiel de Dios y su Palabra. Este año, el Domingo de la Palabra de Dios cae el 25 de enero.

Según el Papa Francisco, “Hay una manera particular de escuchar lo que el Señor desea decirnos en su palabra y de dejarnos transformar por el Espíritu. Debemos escuchar la palabra de Dios y luego, en los momentos siguientes, preguntarnos: ‘Señor, ¿qué me dice este texto? ¿Qué aspecto de mi vida quieres cambiar con este texto? ¿Qué me inquieta de este texto? O quizás: ¿Qué encuentro agradable en este texto? ¿Qué me conmueve de esta palabra?’”

El tema de este año para el Domingo de la Palabra de Dios es “La palabra de Cristo habita entre vosotros”. La palabra “habitar” significa vivir o residir; sugiere una relación en lugar de momentos fugaces de encuentro. Es hermoso escuchar la Palabra de Dios proclamada en la Misa, pero ¿revisamos las Escrituras dominicales en nuestro tiempo libre, permitiendo que el Espíritu Santo las use para moldear nuestras vidas? Para conocer a Cristo, debemos conocer su Palabra. Si consumimos la Palabra de Dios a diario, descubriremos que tiene el poder de transformar nuestras vidas.

La segunda parte del tema de este año es “entre nosotros”. Cuando encontramos paz, sabiduría y valentía en la Palabra de Dios, podremos compartirla con quienes encontramos cada día. Cuanto mejor conozcamos la Palabra de Dios, mejor preparados estaremos para reflejar a Cristo a nuestros hermanos y hermanas. Podemos transmitir el consuelo que hemos encontrado y dar una respuesta oportuna a los desafíos que seguramente surgirán.

La Cuaresma comienza el 18 de febrero, y todos sabemos que durante la Cuaresma estamos llamados a la oración, el ayuno y la abstinencia. Quizás esta Cuaresma podamos encontrar tiempo fuera de la Misa para orar con las Escrituras. Un buen punto de partida para la Palabra de Dios son las lecturas dominicales. Quizás les convenga leerlas antes de asistir a misa y luego nuevamente después, reflexionando sobre lo que escucharon en la homilía. Ascension Press ofrece un excelente recurso llamado “Domingos con Ascension”, con homilías y podcasts. También pueden encontrar recursos en el sitio web de la Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de los Estados Unidos en usccb.org. Ambos recursos incluso les enviarán contenido directamente a su correo electrónico. Sea cual sea su elección, simplemente avancen con fe y permitan que el Espíritu Santo los guíe y les revele las maravillas de la Palabra de Dios.

Update on Diocesan Annual Campaign | Actualización sobre la Campaña Anual Diocesana

Dear parish family and friends, 

Last week at Masses, an update on the 2025 Diocesan Annual Campaign was shared. As you may know, our current goal for the current DAC is $163,755. To date, through your generosity\ and sacrificial giving, we have raised $107,863. This, in addition to your extraordinary giving for Bishop’s Challenge, known as the Forward in Faith Campaign, is astounding. However, we still need about $55,000 to reach our goal for the DAC by January 31st . If we do not, we will still need to cover this amount, which we are not in a financial position to do.

Currently, less than 10% of our parishioners have contributed toward the DAC this year. If the remaining households would each contribute $25, we would close this gap right away. Fr. Pray and I would humbly ask those of you who have not yet donated to prayerfully consider doing so before the end of this month.

At the same time, as an incentive for additional giving, a generous benefactor has offered to match donations between now and January 31st dollar for dollar up to $10,000. In order to make your donation by the end of the month, you can do so in one of two convenient ways. First, you can write a check payable to St. Francis Xavier Parish, or put cash in an envelope marked 2025 DAC, and just place it in the collection basket. Or, you can scan the QR code on the back of your pew (XC – in the lobby), which will take you to our parish giving page. Just click the “Give to the DAC” red button.

Having said all this, we are also mindful of our 2026 DAC, which will kick off as usual during Lent this year. The Diocesan Annual Campaign helps support so many valuable ministries of our Diocese, including our school, and provides services to us as a parish that we could otherwise just not provide ourselves. La semana pasada, durante las misas, se compartió una actualización sobre la Campaña Anual Diocesana de 2025. Como saben, nuestra meta actual para la Campaña Anual Diocesana es de $163,755. Blessings of Generosity and the Epiphany | Bendiciones de generosidad y la Epifanía

Happy New Year’s! May the peace, joy, and strength of our Lord Jesus Christ and the prayers of His holy mother be with you and your family all through this new year now here! Fr. Pray and I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all of you again for your generous financial contributions this past calendar year. Your stewardship and support of our parish enables us to continue being a spiritual home for so many to grow in our beautiful Catholic faith as we worship the one God, living and true. And speaking of thank-yous – thank you as well for all your goodies and other gifts of kindness that you have blessed us with. As a little joke, I like to call the rectory kitchen countertop the site of the “Reverse Santa Claus Effect” – Santa goes to everyone’s house to get lots of cookies. Well for priests, lots of cookies come to our house  

This weekend, we celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord. In case you’re wondering, Epiphany means revelation or manifestation. It’s on today’s feast that we celebrate God revealing or manifesting Himself in the person of His Son, Jesus Christ. In other words, God is revealed to His people and to the world through the following events: the Magi coming to bring the Christ- child gifts and to worship Him; the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan, when the Holy Spirit descends upon Him and He is revealed as the Son of God; and the miracle at the wedding at Cana, when Jesus performs His first miracle in public, revealing to all His divinity. On this feast, historically (especially in years gone by), the priest would come to parishioners’ houses to bless them, writing a small blessing above the main door. While today in our setting this is a bit more challenging to accomplish in one day – especially at a parish as large as ours – we are making available to you cards with these “blessings” for you to take with you – one per home. Together as a family, simply offer the prayers on the back, and then place the card over the main door in your home. These cards can be found in the narthex of the church and the lobby of the Xavier Center.

Querida familia parroquial y amigos,

¡Feliz Año Nuevo! Que la paz, la alegría y la fortaleza de nuestro Señor Jesucristo y las oraciones de su santa Madre los acompañen a ustedes y a sus familias durante este nuevo año. El Padre Pray y yo queremos aprovechar esta oportunidad para agradecerles sinceramente sus generosas contribuciones económicas durante el año pasado. Su generosidad y apoyo a nuestra parroquia nos permiten seguir siendo un hogar espiritual para que muchos crezcan en nuestra hermosa fe católica, adorando al único Dios, vivo y verdadero. Y hablando de agradecimientos, gracias también por todas las delicias y demás muestras de cariño con las que nos han bendecido. En broma, me gusta llamar a la encimera de la cocina de la casa parroquial el lugar del "Efecto de  Papá Noel al reves": Papá Noel va a casa de todos a recoger muchas galletas. Bueno, en el caso de los sacerdotes, ¡muchas galletas llegan a nuestra casa! 😊

Este fin de semana celebramos la Epifanía del Señor. Por si se lo preguntan, Epifanía significa revelación o manifestación. En esta fiesta celebramos que Dios se revela o se manifiesta en la persona de su Hijo, Jesucristo. En otras palabras, Dios se revela a su pueblo y al mundo a través de los siguientes acontecimientos: la llegada de los Reyes Magos para ofrecerle regalos al Niño Jesús y adorarlo; el Bautismo de Jesús en el Jordán, cuando el Espíritu Santo desciende sobre Él y se revela como el Hijo de Dios; y el milagro en las bodas de Caná, cuando Jesús realiza su primer milagro en público, revelando a todos su divinidad. En esta fiesta, históricamente (sobre todo en años pasados), el sacerdote visitaba las casas de los feligreses para bendecirlas, escribiendo una pequeña bendición sobre la puerta principal. Si bien hoy en día esto es un poco más difícil de lograr en un solo día, especialmente en una parroquia tan grande como la nuestra, ponemos a su disposición tarjetas con estas "bendiciones" para que se las lleven, una por hogar. En familia, simplemente recen las oraciones que se encuentran al dorso y luego coloquen la tarjeta sobre la puerta principal de su casa. Estas tarjetas se encuentran en el vestíbulo de la iglesia y en la entrada del Centro Xavier.

The Holy Family and Mary Our Mother | La Sagrada Familia y María Nuestra Madre

Dear parish family and friends,

I pray that all of you had a very happy, healthy, and holy Christmas with your loved ones as we celebrated the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ. Similarly, on behalf of the entire parish staff, I also wish to all of you a joyous and peace-filled new year.

Today we celebrate the feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. I pray for all of you and your families. The dynamic of family life is often not an easy one, as our various personalities and temperaments can at times clash with one another. And yet the family, in the words of Pope John Paul II, is the “school of love”. As family, we learn how to put up with one another. We learn how to sacrifice for each other. And we learn how to love others and be loved by them in return. Sounds poetic, but we all know the struggle it is! The Holy Family not only shows us, then, that love is God’s purpose for family life, but also strengthens us by their prayers to do so in our very own families. And this includes our parish family :) 

In addition, this Thursday, the Church celebrates Mary under her most glorious title, Mother of God, a holy day of obligation. Here’s a little more on this feast: The Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God is a liturgical celebration observed on January 1st which falls exactly one week after Christmas, the end of the octave of Christmas. The title “Mother of God” goes back to the third and fourth centuries, and the Greek term Theotokos (“The God-bearer”) was officially consecrated as Catholic doctrine at the Council of Ephesus in 431 AD, thus becoming the first Marian dogma. At the end of the Council of Ephesus, crowds of people marched through the streets shouting: “Praised be the Theotokos!” This Catholic dogma is based on the doctrine of Incarnation, as expressed by St. Paul: “God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law” (Galatians 4:4). And in fact, Jesus is God, and as His mother, Mary truly is the Mother of God. What a wonderful way to begin a new year – thankful that in Christ, we not only have a Father in heaven, but his mother as our mother too!

Oro para que todos hayan tenido una Navidad muy feliz, saludable y santa junto a sus seres queridos, al celebrar el Nacimiento de nuestro Señor Jesucristo. De igual manera, en nombre de todo el personal de la parroquia, les deseo a todos un año nuevo lleno de alegría y paz.

Hoy celebramos la fiesta de la Sagrada Familia de Jesús, María y José. Oro por todos ustedes y sus familias. La dinámica de la vida familiar a menudo no es fácil, ya que nuestras diversas personalidades y temperamentos a veces pueden chocar entre sí. Y, sin embargo, la familia, en palabras del Papa Juan Pablo II, es la "escuela del amor". Como familia, aprendemos a tolerarnos mutuamente. Aprendemos a sacrificarnos unos por otros. Y aprendemos a amar a los demás y a ser amados por ellos a cambio. Suena poético, ¡pero todos sabemos lo difícil que es! La Sagrada Familia no solo nos muestra que el amor es el propósito de Dios para la vida familiar, sino que también nos fortalece con sus oraciones para que lo logremos en nuestras propias familias. Y esto incluye a nuestra familia parroquial.

Además, este jueves, la Iglesia celebra a María bajo su título más glorioso, Madre de Dios, un día de precepto. Aquí les comparto un poco más sobre esta fiesta: La Solemnidad de María, Santa Madre de Dios, es una celebración litúrgica que se observa el 1 de enero, exactamente una semana después de Navidad, al final de la octava de Navidad. El título de "Madre de Dios" se remonta a los siglos III y IV, y el término griego Theotokos ("Portadora de Dios") fue consagrado oficialmente como doctrina católica en el Concilio de Éfeso en el año 431 d. C., convirtiéndose así en el primer dogma mariano. Al final del Concilio de Éfeso, multitudes de personas marcharon por las calles gritando: "¡Alabada sea la Theotokos!". Este dogma católico se basa en la doctrina de la Encarnación, como lo expresa San Pablo: "Dios envió a su Hijo, nacido de mujer, nacido bajo la ley" (Gálatas 4:4). Welcoming and Inviting Others to Mass | Dar la bienvenida e invitar a otros a la misa

Dear parish family and friends,

Christmas is coming! As we celebrate our Savior’s nativity this year, I’d like to ask us as a parish to take the following to heart. We all know that various visitors and guests will be joining us for our Christmas liturgies. Therefore, in light of the newborn Messiah, who in His mercy is always generous, compassionate, and understanding, let us treat our guests and visitors in a similar way. Let them have “our” usual pews. Go out of your way to welcome them to our parish. Realize that, just as Jesus met people where they were, and not where His grace would enable them to be, so do we need to try to approach others. This is one way we can make the love of Jesus tangible, so that our guests and visitors – really our brothers and sisters in Christ – will want to come back again. 

Speaking of guests… I’d like to invite you to reach out to someone and invite them back to Mass for Christmas. Maybe they’re someone you know who was raised Catholic, but no longer practices their faith. Perhaps it’s a family member, a friend, or a co-worker. Maybe it’s someone who used to come here, but then stopped after COVID. Don’t worry about being rejected. Even if they say no, most people will just take it as you being thoughtful enough to think of them and ask. It doesn’t need to be heavy-handed or complicated. Just a simple invitation.

How can you do this? Maybe start with sharing that person a favorite Christmas memory – perhaps something that has to do with coming to Mass on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning. Maybe it’s a favorite Christmas carol that speaks to you about the deeper meaning of this holy season, and then you can share how coming to Mass is a special way for you to celebrate that meaning. Perhaps if you’re having a family gathering first, you can invite them along with you to church afterwards. Or, maybe it’s easier to write it in a Christmas card you’ll send someone. Of course, you can always use humor (if appropriate), and remind them that lightning won’t strike if they join you ;) Above all, the goal here is not to give any semblance of judging, but rather of true care and welcome, or even that they have a spiritual home here at St. Francis Xavier Parish. 

And so, as we celebrate the birth of our Savior, a blessed Christmas season to all of you and your loved ones. May the Prince of Peace find an ever-greater welcome in your heart to fill you with an abundance of His grace, mercy, and peace, in a special way in the new year to come.

¡Se acerca la Navidad! Al celebrar el nacimiento de nuestro Salvador este año, me gustaría pedirles que, como parroquia, tengamos en cuenta lo siguiente. Todos sabemos que varios visitantes y amigos se unirán a nosotros en nuestras liturgias navideñas. Por lo tanto, a la luz del Mesías recién nacido, quien en su misericordia es siempre generoso, compasivo y comprensivo, tratemos a nuestros invitados y visitantes de manera similar. Dejemos que ocupen nuestros bancos habituales. Esforcémonos por darles la bienvenida a nuestra parroquia. Comprendamos que, así como Jesús se acercó a las personas tal como eran, y no como su gracia les permitiría ser, así también nosotros debemos intentar acercarnos a los demás. Esta es una manera en que podemos hacer tangible el amor de Jesús, para que nuestros invitados y visitantes, que en realidad son nuestros hermanos y hermanas en Cristo, deseen regresar.

Hablando de invitados... me gustaría invitarlos a que se acerquen a alguien y lo inviten a la Misa de Navidad. Quizás sea alguien que conocen que fue criado en la fe católica, pero que ya no la practica. Quizás sea un familiar, un amigo o un compañero de trabajo. Quizás sea alguien que solía venir aquí, pero que dejó de hacerlo después de la pandemia de COVID-19. No se preocupen por ser rechazados. Incluso si dicen que no, la mayoría de las personas simplemente lo tomarán como un gesto amable de su parte. No tiene que ser algo forzado ni complicado. Solo una simple invitación. 

¿Cómo pueden hacerlo? Quizás empiecen compartiendo con esa persona un recuerdo navideño favorito, tal vez algo relacionado con ir a Misa en Nochebuena o en la mañana de Navidad. Quizás sea un villancico favorito que les hable sobre el significado más profundo de esta santa temporada, y luego pueden compartir cómo ir a Misa es una manera especial para ustedes de celebrar ese significado. Quizás, si van a tener una reunión familiar primero, pueden invitarlos a la iglesia después. O quizás sea más fácil escribirlo en una tarjeta de Navidad que le envíen a alguien. Por supuesto, siempre pueden usar el humor (si es apropiado) y recordarles que no les caerá un rayo si se unen a ustedes. Sobre todo, el objetivo no es dar la impresión de que estan juzgando, sino de mostrar verdadero cariño y bienvenida, e incluso que encuentren un hogar espiritual aquí en la Parroquia de San Francisco Javier.

Y así, al celebrar el nacimiento de nuestro Salvador, les deseo una bendita Navidad a todos ustedes y a sus seres queridos. Que el Príncipe de la Paz encuentre una bienvenida cada vez mayor en sus corazones para llenarlos con la abundancia de su gracia, misericordia y paz, de una manera especial en el nuevo año que comienza.

Reconcile with the Lord as you Prepare for His Arrival | Reconcíliate con el Señor mientras te preparas para su llegada

Dear parish family and friends,

As we come to the end of this year, I want to thank you – each and every one – for your financial support of St. Francis Xavier Parish. Whether it’s through ordinary giving (i.e., the weekly collection) or through extraordinary opportunities (i.e., the Diocesan Annual Campaign, the Forward in Faith Campaign) or both – THANK YOU!

As in any family, so with our parish family, there are always many expenses. One of these is the Diocesan Annual Campaign, which enables our Diocese to offer important ministries and services that each parish could just not provide on its own. This year’s goal for us is $163,755. To date, we have reached $103,190. This means we are only 63% of the way to the finish line. If this goal is not reached by January 31, 2026, we will be responsible for covering the shortfall from our operational funds, which are also currently in deficit. I would like to ask – especially the 90% of households who have not had the chance yet to give to the 2025 DAC – to please consider making a year-end gift. Big or small, every donation really does help. The easiest way to make your secure donation is via the “Give” link at the top of our parish homepage (www.stfxcc.org). Again, thank you for all your support!

Also, this coming Saturday, December 20 at 10 am at the Xavier Center, our Advent parish penance service takes place. This seasonal opportunity brings together many priests to hear your private Confession. As we know, Jesus was born in a stable. But do you know what’s in a stable – other than animals? Poop. A stable can be a smelly and yucky place. And because our souls become tarnished and dirtied by sin, they also need a regular cleaning out. Coming to Confession allows our savior to sweep clean the stable of our hearts, so that we can create a more worthy and welcome place for Him as we prepare to celebrate His birth.

From time to time, though, I get the question “Why do I have to go to Confession?” Why can’t I just confess my sins directly to God? Let’s ask the question this way: Is the person who confesses his or her sins to a priest any better off than someone who confesses directly to God? Yes. First, he or she seeks forgiveness the way Christ intended (see John 20:21-23). Second, by confessing to a priest, the person learns a lesson in humility, which is avoided when one confesses only through private prayer. Third, the person receives sacramental graces that someone who does not go to Confession does not receive; through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, sins are definitively forgiven, and graces to avoid future sin are obtained. Fourth, the person is assured that his or her sins are forgiven; he or she does not have to rely on a subjective “feeling.” Further, the person can obtain sound counsel or advice on avoiding sin in the future. And finally, the penitent experiences consolation on the level of the heart, knowing that he or she is loved perfectly by our heavenly Father, who brings healing to those wounds caused by sin. So, yes, it’s worth going to Confession! “Winter cleaning”, anyone?

So, come to know the tender heart of our heavenly Father for you as you are in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Confessions are also offered here at St. Francis after all scheduled weekday Masses, and on Saturdays after the 4 pm Vigil Mass. Also, there’s a helpful Confession guide on our homepage, which is also available on the doors of the confessionals in the church.

Al llegar al final de este año, quiero agradecerles a todos y cada uno de ustedes por su apoyo financiero a la Parroquia de San Francisco Javier. Ya sea a través de las donaciones habituales (es decir, la colecta semanal) o a través de oportunidades extraordinarias (es decir, la Campaña Anual Diocesana, la Campaña Adelante en la Fe) o ambas, ¡GRACIAS!

Excremento. Un establo puede ser un lugar maloliente y desagradable. Y debido a que nuestras almas se manchan y ensucian con el pecado, también necesitan una limpieza regular. Acudir a la Confesión permite a nuestro salvador limpiar el establo de nuestros corazones, para que podamos crear un lugar más digno y acogedor para Él mientras nos preparamos para celebrar su nacimiento.

De vez en cuando, sin embargo, me preguntan: "¿Por qué tengo que ir a Confesión?" ¿Por qué no puedo simplemente confesar mis pecados directamente a Dios? Planteemos la pregunta de esta manera: ¿Está mejor la persona que confiesa sus pecados a un sacerdote que la que los confiesa directamente a Dios? Sí. Primero, busca el perdón de la manera en que Cristo lo dispuso (véase Juan 20:21-23). ​​Segundo, al confesarse con un sacerdote, aprende una lección de humildad, que se evita cuando uno se confiesa solo a través de la oración privada. Our Blessed Mother can Teach us about Waiting | Nuestra Santísima Madre puede enseñarnos sobre la espera

The season of Advent (Latin for “coming” or “arrival”) is a season of expectant waiting. In the first part of this season, we focus on the triumphant return of Christ in glory one day in His second coming at the end of time; whereas in the second part of this season, we anticipate Jesus’ first coming as the Holy Child of Bethlehem. Imagine what that “first Advent” would have been like for His mother, Mary, about nine months pregnant with her son. The excitement, the trepidation, the anticipation, the hope. And in this season of Advent, the celebrations of our Blessed Mother can teach us about waiting, which is often not an easy experience for us.

First and foremost is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, on December 8. Mary, under this title, is the patroness of the United States of America. As such, it is always a Holy Day of obligation, which means we are obliged to attend Mass, similar to the obligation of Sunday Mass each week. The dogma of the Immaculate Conception teaches that “The most Blessed Virgin Mary, in the first instant of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege granted by almighty God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the savior of the human race, was preserved free from all stain of original sin.” All that time… since the Fall of Adam and Eve, all of creation waited, as God was preparing that worthy vessel for His Son. While other members of the human race are cleansed by God from original sin after birth (through the saving waters of baptism), Mary was preserved beforehand, all so that original sin would not be inherited by her divine son, who from Mary received the entirety of His humanity.

And then on December 12 (and the vigil the night before), we celebrate Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patroness of the Americas and of the pro-life movement. “Why the pro-life movement”, you say? Well, in the miraculous image of the Virgin Mary left behind on the tilma of St. Juan Diego, Mary is pregnant. The black ribbon tied around her waist (womb) indicates this. In fact, in Spanish the word ‘encinta’, which means “pregnant”, literally means “en-ribboned” – wrapped in a ribbon. What else is tied up with a bow? Presents! And who is Jesus, but the greatest gift God the Father has given us – His only-begotten Son, born of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who conceived by the Holy Spirit. 

And so, this Advent season, as we are waiting, let us remember Who we are waiting for – Jesus, the reason for the season, and the reason for our existence. May holy Mary teach us to wait well – that our longing may increase for our Lord Jesus Christ.

El tiempo de Adviento (del latín "venida" o "llegada") es un tiempo de espera expectante. En la primera parte, nos centramos en el regreso triunfal de Cristo en gloria, un día, en su segunda venida al final de los tiempos; mientras que en la segunda, anticipamos la primera venida de Jesús como el Santo Niño de Belén. Imaginen cómo habría sido ese "primer Adviento" para su madre, María, embarazada de unos nueve meses de su hijo. La emoción, la inquietud, la anticipación, la esperanza. Y en este tiempo de Adviento, las celebraciones de nuestra Santísima Madre nos enseñan sobre la espera, que a menudo no es una experiencia fácil.

En primer lugar, está la Solemnidad de la Inmaculada Concepción de la Santísima Virgen María, el 8 de diciembre. María, bajo esta advocación, es la patrona de los Estados Unidos de América. Como tal, siempre es un día de obligación, lo que significa que estamos obligados a asistir a misa, similar a la misa dominical cada semana. El dogma de la Inmaculada Concepción enseña que “La Santísima Virgen María, en el primer instante de su concepción, por singular gracia y privilegio concedido por Dios todopoderoso, en vista de los méritos de Jesucristo, salvador del género humano, fue preservada libre de toda mancha de pecado original”. Y luego, el 12 de diciembre (y la vigilia de la noche anterior), celebramos a Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, patrona de las Américas y del movimiento provida. “¿Por qué el movimiento provida?”, se preguntarán. Pues bien, en la imagen milagrosa de la Virgen María dejada en la tilma de San Juan Diego, María está embarazada. El lazo negro atado alrededor de su cintura (vientre) lo indica. De hecho, en español, la palabra “encinta”, que significa ”embarazada”, significa literalmente “en” mas “cinta”, es decir, envuelta en un lazo. ¿Qué más se envuelve con un lazo? ¡Regalos! ¿Y quién es Jesús, sino el mayor regalo que Dios Padre nos ha dado? Su Hijo unigénito, nacido de la Santísima Virgen María, quien concibió por obra del Espíritu Santo.

Así pues, en este Adviento, mientras esperamos, recordemos a quién esperamos: a Jesús, la razón de este tiempo y la razón de nuestra existencia. Que Santa María nos enseñe a esperar con ternura, para que nuestro anhelo por nuestro Señor Jesucristo aumente.

I hope you all had an enjoyable Thanksgiving, however you may have spent it. I had a good time “up the line” with my family and enjoyed some of my uncle’s homemade wine. He always likes to try new things out on us. The apple is good, not so much the cucumber! This Sunday, November 30, begins the season of Advent, which is our annual time of liturgical and spiritual preparation for both the second coming of Our Lord Jesus Christ at the end of time, as well as the celebration of our Savior’s birth on Christmas. You can check out the following resources to help you make the most of Advent:

As we begin the liturgical season of Advent, please also mark your calendars for our parish Penance Service on Saturday, December 20, at the Xavier Center. Starting at 10 am, we will begin with a short prayer service, followed by the opportunity for Reconciliation. During this time, Eucharistic Adoration will also be taking place in the Multipurpose Room to deepen our encounter with Jesus in this experience of mercy. There will be many priests hearing Confessions (in both English and Spanish) that morning. I encourage each of you, especially if it’s been a while, to come to Reconciliation as a means of preparing yourself spiritually for Christmas. Or, if you’ve had a negative experience in Confession that’s holding you back, come give yourself the opportunity to replace that memory with a positive encounter. Additionally, you’ll find the schedule for Penance Services at neighboring parishes in the bulletin, in case Dec. 20 doesn’t work for your schedule. And you’ll find guides to making a good Confession on the confessional (reconciliation room) doors in the church or on our parish website at www.stfxcc.org/confessions. 

Finally, this weekend we hold our Rite of Acceptance and Welcoming for our candidates (those who are already baptized) and catechumens (those who are not yet baptized) in OCIA (the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults). OCIA is the process by which someone explores the possibility of being received into the fullness of the Catholic faith after a time of formation and education. Do you know someone who has an openness to the Catholic faith and might like to learn more? Invite them to join us for Christian Initiation! Reflecting on Christ the King and Gratitude | Reflexionando sobre Cristo Rey y la gratitud

Dear parish family and friends,

This week, we celebrate two important events – Thanksgiving and the Solemnity of Christ the King. First, about today’s feast day.

The annual celebration of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, was established by Pope Pius XI in 1925 as an antidote to secularism. Secularism is a way of life that leaves God out of man’s thinking and living, and organizes his life as if God did not exist. In many ways, it is a practical form of atheism, as though God were not relevant to one’s daily life, and as if man were sovereign in himself with no one to answer to in the end. As a result, in those days, as is the case today, there is an increasing denial of Christ as king. Many people doubt not only Christ’s authority but even His existence, as well as the Church’s power to continue teaching in Jesus’ name with His very authority. 

Back then, Pius XI, and the rest of the Christian world, witnessed the rise of non-Christian dictatorships in Europe, and saw Catholics being taken in by these earthly authoritarians. These autocrats often attempted to assert authority over the Church. The pope hoped the institution of this feast would help nations see the Church has the right to freedom and immunity from the State; that leaders and nations would see that they are called to give respect to Jesus, the unique savior of mankind; and that the faithful would gain strength from this feast that reminds us that Christ must reign as Lord of our lives – in our hearts, minds, wills, and bodies. Does much of this sound familiar? In fact, we still need the feast of Christ the King in our own day. How blessed we are to know this truth, and to deepen our gratitude for Jesus each week at Mass!

And, of course, we celebrate Thanksgiving this week too. Mass will take place at 9 am in our historic church. It is so easy to often take for granted even those things and people we value the most. How easy is it for us to just presume the freedom to worship or that we have a roof over our heads to worship in.

We remedy any hints of entitlement with the virtue of gratitude. Realizing that everything, from life itself to our names, and everything else we have is ultimately “on loan”. We are the Lord’s – we belong to Him who loves us personally with a power and tenderness we can only begin to imagine. And as Jesus teaches us, if we want to be happy in life, we mustn’t be selfish, including with our words of affirmation.

And so, I want you to know how grateful I am for each of you, and to be serving here at St. Francis Xavier. What a wonderful parish family this is. May God’s great blessings be upon you all and your loved ones.

Esta semana celebramos dos eventos importantes: la Acción de Gracias y la Solemnidad de Cristo Rey. Primero, sobre la fiesta de hoy.

La celebración anual de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo, Rey del Universo, fue instituida por el Papa Pío XI en 1925 como antídoto contra el secularismo. El secularismo es un estilo de vida que excluye a Dios del pensamiento y la vida del hombre, y organiza su vida como si Dios no existiera. En muchos sentidos, es una forma práctica de ateísmo, como si Dios no fuera relevante para la vida cotidiana y como si el hombre fuera soberano en sí mismo sin tener que rendir cuentas a nadie.

Como resultado, en aquellos días, como sucede hoy, existe una creciente negación de Cristo como rey. Muchas personas dudan no solo de la autoridad de Cristo, sino incluso de su existencia, así como del poder de la Iglesia para seguir enseñando en nombre de Jesús con su propia autoridad. En aquel entonces, Pío XI, y el resto del mundo cristiano, presenciaron el auge de dictaduras no cristianas en Europa y vieron cómo los católicos eran engañados por estos autoritarios terrenales. Estos autócratas a menudo intentaban imponer su autoridad sobre la Iglesia. El Papa esperaba que la institución de esta fiesta ayudaria para que las naciones comprendan que la Iglesia tiene derecho a la libertad y a la inmunidad frente al Estado; que los líderes y las naciones comprendieran que están llamados a respetar a Jesús, el único salvador de la humanidad; y que los fieles se fortalecieran con esta fiesta que nos recuerda que Cristo debe reinar como Señor de nuestras vidas: en nuestros corazones, mentes, voluntades y cuerpos. ¿Les suena familiar? Y, por supuesto, también celebramos el Día de Acción de Gracias esta semana. La Misa se llevará a cabo a las 9:00 en nuestra iglesia histórica. Es muy fácil dar por hecho aquellas cosas y personas que más valoramos. Qué fácil es dar por hecho la libertad de la religión o el hecho de tener un techo donde practicarlo.

Solucionamos cualquier indicio de derecho con la virtud de la gratitud, comprendiendo que todo, desde la vida misma hasta nuestros nombres, y todo lo demás que poseemos, y todo lo demás, es un préstamo. Somos del Señor; le pertenecemos a Él, quien nos ama personalmente con un poder y una ternura que apenas podemos imaginar. Y como Jesús nos enseña, si queremos ser felices en la vida, no debemos ser egoístas, ni siquiera con nuestras palabras de afirmación.

Por eso, quiero que sepan lo agradecido que estoy por cada uno de ustedes y por servir aquí en San Francisco Javier. ¡Qué maravillosa familia parroquial! Que Dios los bendiga abundantemente a todos ustedes y a sus seres queridos.

Update on Parish Needs | Actualización sobre las necesidades de la parroquia

Dear parish family and friends,

As you may have realized by now, I am currently away from the parish on a pre-scheduled trip with my priest friends. We belong to what’s called an Emmaus group, where we gather monthly for a time of Eucharistic Adoration, prayer, lunch, and sharing with one another. These are special brothers in the priesthood for me. I’m very much grateful for this time away, but of course I’ll be happy to return back to Gettysburg afterwards!

I’d also like to thank you for your generous reception of my “fatherly fireside chat”. Some of you commented on how much you appreciated this. While there are significant areas for us to focus on as a parish, I believe honest communication is essential in working through them. And speaking of communication and organization, a special thank you to Walt and Rita Tuchalski and ALL the many groups and helpers who made the gift fair an amazing success this year.

In this regard, a few questions about the “Need’s List” have surfaced. Some of you have graciously offered to assist (whole or in part) with one of those needs listed there. And for that, I am extremely grateful!

Also, you may know that our parish has a historic church account to fund capital expense projects, such as our ongoing HVAC replacement, which by the way, the first part of that – the new boiler – was installed this past Monday! Given the significant cost of this project, that account balance has been substantially reduced, such that revenues for these additional projects are needed for the church, not to mention our other buildings.

Additionally, there have also been some people offering to volunteer to help with some of those projects mentioned, further reducing the cost to the parish. We will go forward together.

Finally, a word about this year’s Diocesan Annual Campaign, which I have not yet addressed. As you might know, the DAC is a critical way that we as a parish partner each year with the Diocese of Harrisburg to operate various ministries and provide valuable services to us and so many others that we could just not provide on our own.

Our 2025 DAC parish goal is $163,754.66. To date, gifts received total $85,006.51, with outstanding pledges amounting to $1,755.02. Therefore, we are currently only 52% of the way to our goal, with $78,748.15 still needed by January 31, 2026. I personally support the DAC each year, and know firsthand how important this annual campaign is. I would like to invite all the families of our parish to consider making a contribution. If we all contribute according to our ability, it will go a long way to meeting the 48% we still need. If our goal is not met, unfortunately, we will still be responsible for covering this shortfall from our parish budget. Como ya sabrán, actualmente me encuentro fuera de la parroquia en un viaje programado con mis amigos sacerdotes. Pertenecemos a un grupo llamado Emaús, donde nos reunimos mensualmente para la Adoración Eucarística, la oración, el almuerzo y para compartir. Son hermanos muy especiales para mí en el sacerdocio. Agradezco mucho este tiempo fuera, ¡pero por supuesto que estaré encantado de regresar a Gettysburg después!

También quisiera agradecerles el cálido recibimiento que dieron a mi charla informal. Algunos comentaron lo mucho que la apreciaron. Si bien hay áreas importantes en las que debemos enfocarnos como parroquia, creo que la comunicación honesta es esencial para abordarlas. Y hablando de comunicación y organización, un agradecimiento especial a Walt y Rita Tuchalski y a todos los grupos y voluntarios que hicieron de la feria de regalos un gran éxito este año.

En este sentido, han surgido algunas preguntas sobre la lista de necesidades. Algunos de ustedes se han ofrecido amablemente a ayudar (en total o parcialmente) con alguna de las necesidades mencionadas. ¡Les estoy sumamente agradecido!

Además, como sabrán, nuestra parroquia cuenta con una cuenta histórica para financiar proyectos de infraestructura, como la renovación del sistema de climatización (HVAC), cuya primera parte, el calentador nuevo, se instaló el lunes pasado. Dado el elevado costo de este proyecto, el saldo de dicha cuenta se ha reducido considerablemente, por esto necesitamos ingresos para estos proyectos adicionales, tanto para la iglesia como para nuestros otros edificios.

Asimismo, algunas personas se han ofrecido como voluntarias para ayudar con algunos de los proyectos mencionados, lo que reducirá aún más los costos para la parroquia. Saldremos adelante juntos.

Finalmente, quisiera mencionar la Campaña Diocesana Anual (DAC) de este año, de la cual aún no he hablado. Como sabrán, la Campaña Diocesana Anual es fundamental para que nuestra parroquia colabore cada año con la Diócesis de Harrisburg en el funcionamiento de diversos ministerios y para brindar valiosos servicios a nosotros y a muchos otros que no podríamos ofrecer por nuestra cuenta. Nuestra meta parroquial para el DAC en 2025 es de $163,754.66. Hasta la fecha, hemos recibido donaciones por un total de $85,006.51, con promesas de donación pendientes por $1,755.02. St. Martin of Tours and Veterans Day | Día de San Martín de Tours y Día de los Veteranos

Dear parish family and friends,

You might expect me to talk about today’s feast day of the dedication of the Lateran Basilica, when in 324 A.D. Pope Sylvester established his cathedral and residence on property given to the Church by the Emperor Constantine. It is, in fact, the Cathedral of the Bishop of Rome (the Pope), and is the highest-ranking church in the world – the “mother of all churches”. But alas, I’ll leave that to the homily this weekend. Rather, I’d like to talk about another important event coming up this week – Veterans Day.

In this month of November, we as Catholics focus on the last things – death, divine judgment, heaven, and hell. In this regard, we began with All Saints Day on November 1st – calling to mind our goal of heaven, and those who dwell there in glory – the saints. On November 2nd – All Souls Day – we called to mind our mortality as humans, and focused on the reality of the sin that clings to us, which we must be completely purged of after death before entering into the glory of heaven.

But following All Souls Day, there comes a celebration that many do not realize is related to a canonized saint. I’m speaking of Veterans Day on November 11, and the connection comes through St. Martin of Tours, whose shares his feast day with this date.

On November 11, 1918, the armistice ending World War I went into effect. Known originally as Armistice Day, Congress changed the name to include all veterans, to Veterans Day.

According to the armistice, the “cessation of hostilities” was to begin on the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month”. But did this just happen to occur on the feast day of St. Martin of Tours, whose intercession was fervently sought by many to end the war? Was it chance?

Well, for centuries, St. Martin’s Day had marked a time of new beginnings in Europe — a new school year, the first day of rental agreements, even the date when debts were paid. What better day to mark a new beginning of peace?

But why this association? St. Martin was a Christian Roman soldier. He served for many years, but one day declared to his commander, “I have served you as a soldier; now let me serve Christ.” Eventually, this saint, who started service as a soldier, ultimately became a soldier for Jesus, serving the Church as a Bishop.

But the following story is told by his biographer. In the middle of that winter, Martin encountered at the gate of the city of Amiens (France) a poor man destitute of clothing, who was begging from all who passed by, but was ignored again and again. And although Martin had only the cloak in which he was clad, he took his sword and divided his cloak into two equal parts, and gave one part to the poor man, while he again clothed himself with the remainder. Upon this, some of the bystanders scoffed, but others were cut to the heart. That night in a dream, Martin saw Christ, wearing that portion of the cloak that he had given the beggar, and heard him saying to the angels that surrounded him, “Martin… has clothed me with this garment.”

What an amazing story about the powerful witness of such humble works of mercy! Acts of genuine kindness can still disarm the hardness of heart that has characterized large parts of our society – then and now. Remember, war in the world starts in the human heart. It is the war that is waged there, wounded by sin, that leads to world wars. But, through our simple witness, may the Prince of Peace reign throughout our world and in all hearts.

Quizás esperen que hable sobre la fiesta de hoy, la dedicación de la Basílica de Letrán, cuando en el año 324 d. C. el Papa Silvestre estableció su catedral y residencia en terrenos donados a la Iglesia por el emperador Constantino. Es, de hecho, la Catedral del Obispo de Roma (el Papa), y es la iglesia de mayor rango en el mundo: la “madre de todas las iglesias”. Pero, lamentablemente, dejaré ese tema para la homilía de este fin de semana. En cambio, quisiera hablarles de otro evento importante que se acerca esta semana: el Día de los Veteranos.

En este mes de noviembre, como católicos, nos enfocamos en las últimas cosas: la muerte, el juicio divino, el cielo y el infierno. En este sentido, comenzamos con el Día de Todos los Santos el 1 de noviembre, recordando nuestra meta del cielo y a quienes allí moran en gloria: los santos. El 2 de noviembre, Día de los Fieles Difuntos, recordamos nuestra mortalidad como seres humanos y nos centramos en la realidad del pecado que nos acompaña, del cual debemos ser completamente purificados después de la muerte antes de entrar en la gloria del cielo.

Pero tras el Día de los Fieles Difuntos, llega una celebración que muchos desconocen que está relacionada con un santo canonizado. Me refiero al Día de los Veteranos, el 11 de noviembre, y la conexión se da a través de San Martín de Tours, cuya festividad coincide con esta fecha.

El 11 de noviembre de 1918 entró en vigor el armisticio que puso fin a la Primera Guerra Mundial. Originalmente conocido como Día del Armisticio, el Congreso cambió el nombre a Día de los Veteranos para incluir a todos los veteranos.

Según el armisticio, el cese de las hostilidades debía comenzar a las once de la mañana del undécimo día del undécimo mes. ¿Acaso coincidió esto con la festividad de San Martín de Tours, cuya intercesión muchos imploraban fervientemente para poner fin a la guerra? ¿Fue casualidad?

Durante siglos, el Día de San Martín había marcado un tiempo de nuevos comienzos en Europa: el inicio del año escolar, el comienzo de los contratos de alquiler, incluso la fecha para saldar deudas. ¿Qué mejor día para celebrar un nuevo comienzo de paz?

¿Pero por qué esta asociación? San Martín fue un soldado romano cristiano. Sirvió durante muchos años, pero un día le declaró a su comandante: “Te he servido como soldado; ahora déjame servir a Cristo”. Finalmente, este santo, que comenzó su servicio como soldado, se convirtió en soldado de Jesús, sirviendo a la Iglesia como obispo.

Pero su biógrafo cuenta la siguiente historia. En pleno invierno, Martín se encontró a las puertas de la ciudad de Amiens (Francia) con un hombre pobre y desnudo que mendigaba a todos los que pasaban, pero era ignorado una y otra vez. Y aunque Martín solo tenía la capa que llevaba puesta, tomó su espada y la dividió en dos partes iguales, dándole una al hombre pobre y vistiéndose con la otra. Ante esto, algunos de los presentes se burlaron, pero otros se conmovieron profundamente. Esa noche, en un sueño, Martín vio a Cristo, vestido con la parte del manto que le había dado al mendigo, y lo oyó decir a los ángeles que lo rodeaban: “Martín… me ha vestido con esta vestidura”.

¡Qué historia tan conmovedora sobre el poderoso testimonio de tan humildes obras de misericordia! Los actos de bondad genuina aún pueden desarmar la dureza de corazón que ha caracterizado a gran parte de nuestra sociedad, tanto entonces como ahora. Recordemos que la guerra en el mundo comienza en el corazón humano. Es la guerra que se libra allí, herida por el pecado, la que conduce a las guerras mundiales. Pero, a través de nuestro sencillo testimonio, que el Príncipe de la Paz reine en todo el mundo y en todos los corazones.

Praying for Our Beloved Dead | Orando por nuestros amados difuntos

Dear parish family and friends,

Last week at Masses, I delivered my “fatherly fireside chat” – an opportunity for me to comment further on the current state of our parish. If you didn’t hear that (or read it in last week’s bulletin), I’d like to invite you to check that out.

In addition to highlighting all the wonderful things here at St. Francis – from the welcoming community and the acts of kindness, among other things – I also identified current challenges presenting themselves. Although our parish retired the previous land debt, thanks to your outstanding generosity, unfortunately, our collections have not allowed us to keep pace with our current expenses, and we therefore find ourselves in a cash deficit situation.

But beyond our ordinary expenses, we also have our facilities to maintain. In this regard, as I mentioned last week, I would be including a parish “Needs List” – not a wish list – but truly a list of what we presently need to work on. You will find that list in today’s bulletin. There are projects of various scopes and amounts at our various locations. If you’d like to contribute, simply write “Needs List” and then the Project number (or numbers) in the memo line. Full or partial donations to specific projects are welcome, as are general contributions. If you have any further questions or comments, please just let me know.

And finally, during the entire month of November, there are many beautiful Catholic traditions that invite us as the Church on earth to pray for our beloved dead – that is the Church being purified in purgatory. Struggling with the teaching on purgatory? Pope Benedict explained purgatory as a process, much more than a place. It’s the process of final purification. Think of it as a mudroom leading into the Father’s House. There, Jesus cleanes us of the crud of our sins and our attachment to them, since we must be spotless and made fully righteous before coming into the presence of the immaculate Almighty God. Truthfully speaking, most people will pass through purgatory before entering into heaven. It’s the final act of God’s mercy won for us by Jesus on the cross. It is therefore a spiritual work of mercy to pray for our beloved dead.

To this end, I invite you to take part in the following: 1) to write the names of deceased family and friends in the “Liber Defunctorum” (Book of the Deceased) located in the lobby of both the historic church and the Xavier Center (by the paschal candle). There is a sign there explaining this ancient tradition further; 2) if you haven’t already done so, please complete the purple “All Souls Day” intentions envelope (found in the packet you receive upon registering), writing down the names of all your beloved dead that you would like Fr. Pray and I to pray for during Masses in the month of November. In particular, we will be offering a total of 7 Masses (number of divine perfection) during November for all your intentions listed, which will be indicated in the bulletin as “All Souls”. Eternal rest grant to them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

La semana pasada, durante las misas, presenté “mi charla fraternal” , una oportunidad para profundizar sobre el tema del estado actual de nuestra parroquia. Si no la escucharon (o no la leyeron en el boletín de la semana pasada), los invito a que la lean.

Además de destacar todas las cosas maravillosas que hay aquí en San Francisco, desde la acogedora comunidad hasta los actos de bondad, entre otras cosas, también identifiqué los desafíos actuales. Si bien nuestra parroquia canceló la deuda anterior de tierras gracias a su extraordinaria generosidad, lamentablemente nuestras colectas no nos han permitido cubrir nuestros gastos actuales, por lo que nos encontramos en una situación de déficit de efectivo.

Pero además de nuestros gastos ordinarios, también tenemos que mantener nuestras instalaciones. En este sentido, como mencioné la semana pasada, incluiré una "Lista de Necesidades" de la parroquia; no una lista de deseos, sino una lista de lo que necesitamos hacer actualmente. Encontrarán esa lista en el boletín de hoy. Hay proyectos de diversos alcances y montos en nuestras distintos locales. Si desea contribuir, simplemente escriba "Lista de Necesidades" y luego el número (o números) del Proyecto en la línea de notas del cheque. Se agradecen las donaciones totales o parciales para proyectos específicos, al igual que las contribuciones generales. Si tiene alguna otra pregunta o comentario, por favor, hágamelo saber.

Y finalmente, durante todo el mes de noviembre, hay muchas hermosas tradiciones católicas que nos invitan, como Iglesia en la tierra, a orar por nuestros seres queridos fallecidos; es decir, la Iglesia que se purifica en el purgatorio. ¿Tiene dificultades con la enseñanza sobre el purgatorio? El Papa Benedicto XVI explicó el purgatorio como un proceso, mucho más que un lugar. Es el proceso de purificación final. Imagínelo como un vestíbulo que conduce a la Casa del Padre. Allí, Jesús nos limpia de la suciedad de nuestros pecados y nuestro apego a ellos, ya que debemos estar inmaculados y plenamente justificados antes de entrar en la presencia del inmaculado Dios Todopoderoso. A decir verdad, la mayoría de las personas pasarán por el purgatorio antes de entrar al cielo. Es el acto final de la misericordia de Dios que Jesús obtuvo para nosotros en la cruz. Por lo tanto, es una obra espiritual de misericordia orar por nuestros seres queridos difuntos.

Para ello, los invito a participar en lo siguiente: 1) escribir los nombres de sus familiares y amigos fallecidos en el "Liber Defunctorum" (Libro de los Difuntos), ubicado en el vestíbulo de la iglesia histórica y del Centro Xavier (junto la vela pascual). Allí encontrará un cartel que explica con más detalle esta antigua tradición; 2) si aún no lo han hecho, por favor, completen el sobre morado de intenciones del "Día de los Fieles Difuntos" (que se encuentra en el paquete que recibirán al registrarse), escribiendo los nombres de todos sus seres queridos difuntos por quienes desean que el Padre Pray y yo oremos durante las misas de noviembre. En particular, ofreceremos un total de 7 misas (número de perfección divina) durante noviembre por todas sus intenciones, que se indicarán en el boletín como "Fieles Difuntos". Update on Parish Matters | Actualización sobre asuntos parroquiales

Two weeks ago, I wrote a letter to all of you, our registered parishioners, to formally introduce myself and offer some initial thoughts and impressions from my first three months here at St. Francis. Last week in the bulletin, we shared with you our parish report, which encompasses the spiritual and financial realities of our parish over the past year. This week at Masses, I am delivering a “fatherly fireside chat” – just an opportunity to comment further on the current state of our parish. I have learned that the key to every fruitful relationship – whether friendship, marriage, or as a parish family – hinges on successful communication. I hope you can see in these initial steps intentional efforts to improve communication and organization.

To start, I want to reiterate my gratitude for the beautiful welcome you have given me since arriving here. From the 100 or so people who came out to the open house several weeks ago to all the meals, cards, and smiles, you have made Fr. Pray and I feel so welcome here. Thank you! We are blessed to serve such a community.

Allow me to give you a little update on our participation as a Next Generation Parish through CLI – the Catholic Leadership Institute. Over the past year, our Faith Formation priority has done a lot, and there are some great offerings to come to help you grow deeper in your faith. The Community priority has re-established itself and will be helping us grow in the experience of unity and togetherness, even as they welcome our new parishioners. And finally, the Management and Operations priority has been helping me in so many ways, especially with the registry update and the operation of our parish office. I feel grateful for what has already been done, and I am excited to develop our potential in the years to come. There is lots to look forward to as we grow as disciples of Jesus together as a parish family.

At the same time, there have been some surprises since arriving here at St. Francis. With various communities, at various locations, with lots of good stuff going on, this is really a busy parish! Also, as you may have learned from the financial report from last week, we unfortunately ended this past fiscal year in deficit. Perhaps you’re thinking to yourself – “But, I thought we just got out of debt!” And in fact, you did – in a special way, through your outstanding generosity through the Bishop’s Challenge to retire the past land debt.

Earlier this past year, an initiative called “20 in 25” was launched, and as a result, the weekly collection saw a marked increase. However, since then, the collection has returned to the prior levels. And while we do our best to contain expenses, our income has not kept pace. Next month, our parish finance council will be providing me with helpful guidance on how to proceed. Please know that I deeply value your generous contributions and sacrificial offerings – I truly do.

Beyond our ordinary expenses, we also have our facilities to maintain. And with a footprint as large as ours, and with a beautiful historic church to boot, there is always more work to keep up with. To give an update on the HVAC replacement at the historic church, the Facilities Committee has been a great help to me. Two weeks ago, we at long last accepted a bid to give us the exact system that we need to meet our heating and cooling needs for years to come. That project will be finished by the end of January.

For those of you wondering: “What else needs fixed?”, or “How else can we help?”, next week in the bulletin, we’ll be presenting you with a Needs List – not a wish list, but truly a “needs list”, which identifies those projects of varying degrees that we look to work on.

As a word of hope, at this time, our school has reason to be grateful, too. This year, our enrollment has in fact remained stable – and with a hopeful sign, our pre-K and Kindergarten are over 20 students each – something that has not happened in quite some time! I am grateful for the hard work of our principal and school staff. In addition, this year, we have brought on board a new advancement director with development oversight to really help us grow. And we maintain close communication with the Diocese to help our school thrive.

While I could go on and on, I need to stop somewhere – so, I’ll leave it here. As I reflect on my priorities as your pastor, I want you to know that in addition to focusing on improving communication and organization, my greatest goal, along with Fr. Pray, is to provide true pastoral care – to personally serve you with devotion in order to help you grow spiritually in your Catholic faith so that we can together live it out more fully! Hace dos semanas, les escribí una carta a todos ustedes, nuestros feligreses registrados, para presentarme formalmente y compartir algunas reflexiones e impresiones iniciales de mis primeros tres meses aquí en San Francisco. La semana pasada, en el boletín, compartimos con ustedes nuestro informe parroquial, que abarca la realidad espiritual y financiera de nuestra parroquia durante el último año. Esta semana, durante las misas, les daré una charla informal. Será una oportunidad para expliquar mas profundamente el estado actual de nuestra parroquia. Hace dos semanas, finalmente aceptamos una oferta para obtener el sistema exacto que necesitamos para satisfacer nuestras necesidades de calefacción y refrigeración durante los próximos años. Ese proyecto estará terminado a finales de enero.

Este año, nuestra matrícula se ha mantenido estable, y con una señal alentadora, nuestros alumnos de preescolar y kínder superan los 20 cada uno, ¡algo que no había sucedido en mucho tiempo! Agradezco el arduo trabajo de nuestra directora y del personal escolar. Además, este año hemos incorporado a un nueva directora de desarrollo con la supervisión necesaria para que podamos crecer. Mantenemos una estrecha comunicación con la Diócesis para que nuestra escuela prospere.

Aunque podría extenderme, necesito detenerme en algún punto, así que lo dejo aquí. Al reflexionar sobre mis prioridades como su párroco, quiero que sepan que, además de centrarme en mejorar la comunicación y la organización, mi mayor objetivo, junto con el Padre Pray, es brindar una verdadera atención pastoral: servirles personalmente con devoción para ayudarlos a crecer espiritualmente en su fe católica y así poder vivirla juntos con mayor plenitud. Importance of Confession | Importancia de la confesión

Dear parish family and friends,

From time to time, I get the question “Why do I have to go to Confession?” Why can’t I just confess my sins directly to God? Let’s ask the question this way: Is the person who confesses his or her sins to a priest any better off than someone who confesses directly to God? Yes. First, he or she seeks forgiveness the way Christ intended (see John 20:21-23). Second, by confessing to a priest, the person learns a lesson in humility, which is avoided when one confesses only through private prayer. Third, the person receives sacramental graces that someone who does not go to Confession does not receive; through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, sins are definitively forgiven, and graces to avoid future sin are obtained. Fourth, the person is assured that his or her sins are forgiven; he or she does not have to rely on a subjective “feeling.” Further, the person can obtain sound counsel or advice on avoiding sin in the future. And finally, the penitent experiences consolation on the level of the heart, knowing that he or she is loved perfectly by our heavenly Father, who brings healing to those wounds caused by sin. So, yes, it’s worth going to Confession. That’s why God gave His Church this sacrament!

The follow-up question I get is “How often should I go to Confession then?” Whenever someone is conscious of mortal (serious) sin, they should go to Confession sooner rather than later, as such sins rupture our relationship with God. Apart from that, I recommend Confession quarterly – every season as a standing practice. And practice makes perfect – indeed! So, come to know the tender heart of our heavenly Father for you as you are in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Confessions are offered here at St. Francis on Saturdays after the 4 pm Vigil Mass, and after each weekday Mass.

Going to Confession in Twelve Easy Steps

1. Examine your conscience, call to mind your sins, and then enter the confessional.

2. The priest will welcome and receive you.

3. Make the sign of the cross and say: “In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.”

4. The priest will invite you to trust in God. He may also read a text of Sacred Scripture.

5. Say these or similar words: “Bless me Father for I have sinned. It has been _____ long since my last confession. I am (married, single, etc.). These are my sins…”

6. Tell the priest your sins. Then say these or similar words: “For these and all of my sins, I am sorry.”

7. Accept your work of penance (prayers, act of kindness, etc.) to help make satisfaction for sin and to amend your life.

8. Express your sorrow for your sins (Act of Contrition) in these or similar words:

“O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended you,

and I detest all my sins because of your just punishments,

but most of all because they offend you, my God,

who are all good and deserving of all my love.

I firmly resolve, with the help of your grace,

to sin no more, and to avoid the near occasions of sin.

Amen.”

9. Receive God’s forgiveness as the priest prays the Prayer of Absolution.

10. At the end of the Prayer of Absolution, reply: “Amen.”

11. Give praise to God. When the priest says: “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,” conclude: “For his mercy endures forever.”

12. Go in peace and remember to say or do your penance.

Queridos familiares y amigos de la parroquia:

De vez en cuando me preguntan: "¿Por qué tengo que confesarme?". ¿Por qué no puedo confesar mis pecados directamente a Dios? Preguntémoslo así: ¿Es mejor quien confiesa sus pecados a un sacerdote que quien se confiesa directamente a Dios? Sí.

Primero, busca el perdón como Cristo quiso (ver Juan 20:21-23). ​​Segundo, al confesarse con un sacerdote, aprende una lección de humildad, que se evita cuando uno se confiesa solo mediante la oración privada. As Believers and the Children of God we are the Church | Como creyentes e hijos de Dios somos la Iglesia

Dear parish family and friends, 

To those who attend weekend Masses at the historic church, welcome back! This weekend, we resume our previous schedule there: 4 pm on Saturdays (with Confessions immediately afterwards), and 7:30 and 10:30 am on Sundays. Also, all holy day Masses will take place in the church as well. As part of our grand re-opening, you’ll notice the following:

• While the HVAC system (cooling and heating) has not yet been replaced, it will be in the next couple of months – at long last!

• Due to two gracious benefactors and the work of Bob Omick and our Facilities Committee (THANK YOU, ALL!), the lights in the church have been replaced with cost-saving, warm-light LED bulbs, providing such a soft, inviting glow.

• New candle banks in the two votive areas with the standard 4-hour candles have been installed. When we offer a prayer and then light a votive candle, it symbolizes the enduring nature of our prayer, which comes to the Father through Jesus, who is the light of the world.

• The sound system was re-balanced to achieve the best possible quality.

• And finally, the church had a deep cleaning to prepare for our full return.

Additionally, a little birdy told me that our Community CLI group will be providing refreshments after Masses at the church this weekend!

Did you know that the building known as the church is called the church because the body of believers who meet there is called the church? In fact, as the Body of Christ, we are the Church – children of God our Father. That word church is ‘ekklesia’ in Greek (the original language of the Church), meaning “called out from”. And so, although as believers we live in the world, we are not of the world. And so, we are called out of the world for a time, to be renewed by God’s grace through His Word and the sacraments. We then return into the world – our daily lives – in order to be a bright light in the world, until the Lord calls us at last out of the world to our heavenly homeland.

Speaking of homes, on Oct. 10 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, Fr. Pray and I would like to invite you to an open house at the rectory (the house where the priests live) to meet you personally in a friendly setting – the address is in the letter you are receiving in the mail this week. 

Finally, in that letter, I’m asking ALL parishioners to kindly update their contact information so as to update our parish registry. We know that many times changes since your original registration take place, and we would like to have your most up-to-date information to more effectively communicate with you. In the letter there will be further directions on how to do this in an easy way – either online or via the paper copy enclosed in the mailing. It is important that every family updates their information. Thank you.

A quienes asisten a las misas de fin de semana en la histórica iglesia, ¡bienvenidos de nuevo! Este fin de semana, regresamos a nuestro horario anterior: sábados a las 4 p. m. (con confesiones inmediatamente después) y domingos a las 7:30 y 10:30 a. m. Además, todas las misas de los días festivos se celebrarán en la iglesia. Como parte de nuestra gran reapertura, notarán lo siguiente:

Dear parish family and friends, 

This weekend I am officially installed by Bishop Senior as your pastor here at St. Francis Xavier. I’m repeating here what I wrote in last week’s column, but with some additional important details.

Since I’m officially your pastor now, I’d like to let you know about several things to look for in the weeks ahead.

First, at long last, I can share with you that we will return to the historic church for weekend Masses the first weekend in October – that’s Oct. 4th and 5th. The Facilities Committee and I have recently selected a local company to replace our HVAC (heating and air conditioning), with the work commencing as soon as possible. Although the installation will not be completed by the time of our return, the fall weather will allow for a comfortable temperature. Thank you very much for your patience throughout this process. And, did I mention there’ll be some good surprises that I think you’re going to just love when you come back!  

Although our arrangement wasn’t ideal over the summer, numerous people shared with me some of the positives about being at the Xavier Center for Masses:

• Parking was much easier for everyone.

• It was easier for some of our seniors and those with mobility issues to come and go.

• As a parish family, we were all in one place, and it was good to see one another before and after Masses.

• We had a place to gather for socializing after Mass to grow as a community.

Second, be on the lookout in the mail. You’ll be receiving a letter I’m sending out to all 2,268 households in our parish to formally introduce myself and to share my thoughts on some important matters! Please check that out when it arrives. 

One of those items will be to invite you, our parishioners, on Oct. 10 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm to an open house that Fr. Finally, in the weeks ahead, we’ll be updating our parish registry. We know that many times that changes since your original registration take place, and we would like to have your most up-to-date information to more effectively communicate with you. In the letter I mentioned there will be further directions of how to do this in an easy way – either online or via the paper copy enclosed in the mailing. It is important that every family updates their information.

Estimados familiares y amigos de la parroquia:

Este fin de semana, el Obispo Senior me instituye oficialmente como su párroco aquí en San Francisco Javier. Repito lo que escribí en la columna de la semana pasada, pero con algunos detalles importantes adicionales.

Ya que ahora soy oficialmente su párroco, me gustaría informarles sobre varias cosas que deben tener en cuenta en las próximas semanas.

Primero, por fin, puedo compartir con ustedes que regresaremos a la histórica iglesia para las misas de fin de semana el primer fin de semana de octubre, es decir, el 4 y el 5 de octubre. El Comité de Instalaciones y yo hemos seleccionado recientemente una empresa local para reemplazar nuestro sistema de calefacción y aire acondicionado (HVAC), y las obras comenzarán lo antes posible. Aunque la instalación no estará terminada para nuestro regreso, el clima otoñal permitirá una temperatura agradable. Muchas gracias por su paciencia durante este proceso. Y, ¿mencioné que habrá algunas buenas sorpresas que creo que les encantarán cuando regresen? 

Aunque nuestra situación no fue ideal durante el verano, varias personas compartieron conmigo algunos de los aspectos positivos de estar en el Centro Xavier para Misas:

• El estacionamiento fue mucho más fácil para todos.

• Para algunas personas mayores y con problemas de movilidad, fue más fácil ir y venir.

• Como familia parroquial, estábamos todos en un mismo lugar, y fue un placer vernos antes y después de las misas.

• Teníamos un lugar para reunirnos y socializar después de la misa para crecer como comunidad.

En segundo lugar, estén atentos al correo. Recibirán una carta que estoy enviando a los 2268 hogares de nuestra parroquia para presentarme formalmente y compartir mis ideas sobre algunos asuntos importantes. Por favor, revísenla cuando llegue.

Una de esas cartas será invitarlos, feligreses, el 10 de octubre, de 5:30 p. m. a 7:30 p. m., a una jornada de puertas abiertas que el Padre Pray y yo organizaremos en la rectoría (la casa donde viven los sacerdotes) para conocerlos personalmente en un ambiente agradable. La dirección está en la carta. Como dice el dicho, "mi casa es su casa". ¡Únase a nosotros! 

Finalmente, en las próximas semanas, actualizaremos nuestro registro parroquial. Sabemos que esto suele cambiar desde su inscripción original, y nos gustaría tener su información más actualizada para comunicarnos con usted de manera más eficaz. En la carta que mencioné, encontrará más instrucciones sobre cómo hacerlo de forma sencilla, ya sea en línea o mediante la copia impresa incluida en el correo. Es importante que cada familia actualice su información.

Dear parish family and friends,

This coming weekend I will officially be installed by Bishop Senior as your pastor here at St. Francis Xavier. It certainly has been a busy three months since my arrival! But, I have received a very warm welcome, for which I am grateful! 

As your soon-to-be official your pastor, I’d like to let you know about several things to look for in the weeks ahead. 

First, at long last, I can share with you that we will return to the historic church for weekend Masses the first weekend in October – that’s Oct. 4 th and 5 th . The Facilities Committee and I have recently selected a local company to replace our HVAC (heating and air conditioning), with the work commencing as soon as possible. Although the installation will not be completed by the time of our return, the fall weather will allow for a comfortable temperature. Thank you very much for your patience throughout this process. Although our arrangement wasn’t ideal over the summer, numerous people shared with me some of the positives about being at the Xavier Center for Masses:

• Parking was much easier for everyone.

• It was easier for some of our seniors and those with mobility issues to come and go.

• As a parish family, we were all in one place, and it was good to see one another before and after Masses.

• We had a place to gather for socializing after Mass to grow as a community.

Second, be on the lookout in the mail. Soon I’ll be sending out a letter to all 2,268 households in our parish to formally introduce myself and to share my thoughts on some important matters!

One of those items will be to invite our parishioners on Oct. 10 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm to an open house that Fr. Pray and I will be hosting at the rectory (the house where the priests live) to meet you personally in a friendly setting. As the saying goes, “mi casa es su casa”. Join us!
