Baptism

The soul is regenerated in the sacred waters of baptism and thus becomes God's child.

What is the Sacrament of Baptism?

We can see Baptism prefigured in the Old Testament, in the story of Noah and the Ark, that he and his family were saved by water through water; in the story of Moses and the Israelites crossing the Red Sea, that their liberation from slavery in Egypt was accomplished through passing through the water; and at the crossing of the Jordan River when God’s people finally reached the land God had promised them (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1218-1222).

In the New Testament, we see Jesus begin his public ministry after having been baptized by St. John the Baptist in the Jordan River (CCC, 1223). He then commanded His disciples to do the same. The Catechism says, “After his resurrection Christ gives this mission to his apostles: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you"" (CCC, 1223). At Pentecost, St. Peter declared the same, after preaching to the crowds, “Repent and be baptized!” (Acts 2:38).

The Lord himself affirms that Baptism is necessary for salvation. He also commands his disciples to proclaim the Gospel to all nations and to baptize them. Baptism is necessary for salvation for those to whom the Gospel has been proclaimed and who have had the possibility of asking for this sacrament. The Church does not know of any means other than Baptism that assures entry into eternal beatitude; this is why she takes care not to neglect the mission she has received from the Lord to see that all who can be baptized are "reborn of water and the Spirit." God has bound salvation to the sacrament of Baptism, but he himself is not bound by his sacraments. (CCC, 1257)
