Sunday of the Word of God | Domingo de la Palabra de Dios

In his Apostolic Letter Aperuit illis issued September 30, 2019, Pope Francis established that the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time is to be observed as Sunday of the Word of God. It is a day to be devoted to “celebration, study, and spreading of the Word of God.” Pope Francis is inviting Catholics across the world to deepen their appreciation, love and faithful witness to God and his Word.
This year, the Sunday of the Word of God falls on January 21. According to the Holy Father, “There is one particular way of listening to what the Lord wishes to tell us in his word and of letting ourselves be transformed by the Spirit. We must listen to God’s word, and then, in the moments that follow, ask, “Lord, what does this text say to me? What is it about my life that you want to change by this text? What troubles me about this text? Or perhaps: What do I find pleasant in this text? What is it about this word that moves me?”
This year’s theme of the Sunday of the Word of God is “Remain in My Word.” We are all familiar with the two greatest commandments: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” (Matthew 22, v. 37-39.) If we truly listen to the scripture passages read each Sunday, we can’t help but recognize that the Bible gives us so many examples of how to remain in God’s word, and love our neighbor. Do I see Jesus in the hungry, do I see him in the sick or in the imprisoned? (Mt 25:42). Do I create division and not want to cooperate with those who are not of my liking? (Mk 9:38). Have I hurt my brother or sister with sarcasm, forgetfulness, misunderstanding? (Mt 5:22).
Lent begins on February 14. Perhaps this year, instead of giving up something, or in addition to corporal sacrifice, we should do something: be generous, be patient, be forgiving, be humble. Read the Bible, take God’s word to heart, and thus truly “remain in His word.”

El tema de este año del Domingo de la Palabra de Dios es “Permaneced en Mi Palabra”. Todos estamos familiarizados con los dos mandamientos más importantes: “'Ama al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón, con toda tu alma y con toda tu mente'. Este es el primer y más grande mandamiento. Y el segundo es parecido: 'Ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo'” (Mateo 22, v. 37-39). Si realmente escuchamos los pasajes de las Escrituras que se leen cada domingo, no podemos evitar reconocer que la Biblia nos da nos da tantos ejemplos de cómo permanecer en la palabra de Dios y amar al prójimo. ¿Veo a Jesús en los hambrientos, lo veo en los enfermos o en los encarcelados? (Mt 25:42). ¿Creo división y no quiero cooperar con aquellos que no son de mi agrado? (Mc 9,38). ¿He herido a mi hermano o hermana con sarcasmo, olvido, incomprensión? (Mt 5:22).
La Cuaresma comienza el 14 de febrero. Quizás este año, en lugar de renunciar a algo, o además del sacrificio corporal, deberíamos hacer algo: ser generosos, tener paciencia, perdonar, ser humildes. Lea la Biblia, tome en serio la palabra de Dios y así “permanezca verdaderamente en Su palabra”.
