The Antiphons at Mass | Las Antífonas en la Misa

My dear friends,

You may have noticed a new sound coming from the choir loft on High Street during Communion. This new sound is, in fact, a very old sound. With the reintroduction of the distribution of the Precious Blood at Mass, Communion takes quite a bit longer than it did in the Covid days. This is a beautiful opportunity to introduce into our parish the practice of singing the antiphons during Communion!

What is an antiphon? An antiphon is a short phrase which is repeated between stanzas of a Psalm, just like the Responsorial Psalm after the First Reading. It gives those gathered for worship the opportunity to sing with the words of Scripture and only have to know a short phrase and not the many verses of a hymn. How many of us have had to stop singing the Communion hymn while we were approaching the altar? Beyond the practicality of it, there is an even better reason to be singing the antiphons: this is what Holy Mother Church has asked us to do during the Mass.

Just after the Second Vatican Council, in a document called “Musicam Sacram” (Sacred Music), the Church told us that “the assembly of the faithful should participate in singing the Proper of the Mass [the antiphons] as much as possible, especially through simple responses and other suitable settings.” The bishops of the United States repeated this desire in 2007 in the instruction on music in the liturgy, Sing to the Lord.

“But doesn’t this make the whole Mass sound the same? The Communion antiphon sounds just like the Responsorial Psalm!” Yes! That was intentional. The Mass is one big prayer, and the unity of the music helps us remember the unity of the prayer. “But what does [insert antiphon] have to do with the Eucharist?” The antiphons are often not directly connected with the Eucharist, but instead with the readings or the liturgical season. “But why do we keep singing the same ones?” Because we are slowly learning more. The more we sing them, the more we know, and the more we can sing!
