Dear Families and Friends of St. Francis Xavier Parish,  

“And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, receiving the word in great affliction, with joy from the Holy Spirit”

These words from this weekend’s second reading, from the letter of Saint Paul to the Thessalonians, seem to be a good lens for this column… that we acknowledge the difficulties of our situation, but in the light and joy of the Holy Spirit. After all, God tells us through the prophet Jeremiah, “For I know well the plans I have in mind for you—plans for your welfare and not for woe, so as to give you a future of hope.” 

I’ve received some questions regarding the property debt situation. Following the guidance of our financial consultants, Kirby-Smith, we have six months interest-free on the debt, and we laid out a plan for these six months proactively to have a series of meetings with a representative group of the parish to gauge our vision for where we are, and where we see our parish going, and our plans and commitment to make that happen. We’ve had the first two meetings, and after the third, we will set up a meeting with the diocese to dialogue with them about all this. So as soon as we got the news of the debt, we moved immediately to address it, and we’ve even already received generous donations toward it (thank you!!). So that’s an update to that. 

I’ve also received news that there is gossip within the parish about accusations of fraud toward the diocese. I understand people are upset, which does not bring out the best reactions. Many years ago, the diocese proactively separated parishes, schools, operations, and property (and a few other entities) into trust accounts, so that these entities would be able to continue if the diocese itself had financial difficulty. This was wise financial stewardship. Our parish property debt is an internal question of shifting the value of the property from one trust to another (diocesan properties to our parish). So, while we continue to investigate the paper trail, it’s unjust to spread accusations, which I hope will stop. Being upset is understandable. Prayer for our parish, trust in God, and joy in the Holy Spirit, are a holier response.

Estimadas familias y amigos de la parroquia San Francisco Xavier,

“Se hicieron imitadores nuestros y del Señor, pues en medio de muchas tribulaciones y con la alegría que da el Espíritu Santo han aceptado la palabra de Dios”

Estas palabras de la segunda lectura de este fin de semana, de la carta de San Pablo a los Tesalonicenses, parecen ser un buen lente para esta columna… que reconozcamos las dificultades de nuestra situación, pero a la luz y el gozo del Espíritu Santo. Después de todo, Dios nos dice a través del profeta Jeremías: “Porque yo sé bien los planes que tengo para ustedes, planes para su bienestar y no para su dolor, a fin de darles un futuro de esperanza”.

He recibido algunas preguntas sobre la situación de la deuda inmobiliaria. Siguiendo la guía de nuestros asesores financieros, Kirby-Smith, tenemos seis meses sin intereses sobre la deuda, y trazamos un plan para estos seis meses de manera proactiva para tener una serie de reuniones con un grupo representativo de la parroquia para evaluar nuestra visión de dónde estamos y hacia dónde vemos que se dirige nuestra parroquia, nuestros planes y compromiso para que eso suceda. Hemos tenido las dos primeras reuniones y después de la tercera planearemos una reunión con la diócesis para dialogar con ellos sobre todo esto. Entonces, tan pronto como recibimos la noticia de la deuda, tomamos medidas de inmediato para abordarla e incluso ya hemos recibido generosas donaciones para ello (¡¡gracias!!). Esta es una actualización sobre ese tema.

También he recibido noticias de que hay rumores dentro de la parroquia sobre acusaciones de fraude hacia la diócesis. Entiendo que la gente está molesta y eso no provoca las mejores reacciones. Hace muchos años, la diócesis separó proactivamente parroquias, escuelas, operaciones y propiedades (y algunas otras entidades) en cuentas de fideicomiso, para que estas entidades pudieran continuar si la diócesis misma tuviera dificultades financieras. Esta fue una sabia administración financiera. La deuda de nuestra propiedad parroquial es una cuestión interna de transferir el valor de la propiedad de un fideicomiso a otro (propiedades diocesanas a nuestra parroquia). Entonces, mientras continuamos investigando el rastro documental, es injusto difundir acusaciones, que espero que cesen. Estar molesto es comprensible. La oración por nuestra parroquia, la confianza en Dios y el gozo en el Espíritu Santo son una respuesta más santa.
