Share the Light of Christ | Comparte la luz de Cristo

Dear Families and Friends of St. Francis Xavier Parish, 

“A bruised reed he shall not break, and a smoldering wick he shall not quench.” (Isa 42:3)

This verse from one of the options for our first reading today has long been close to my heart. The prophet Isaiah foretells of the mission of the Messiah being gentle and patient. Certainly He gives the fullness of truth. And certainly we see people in the bible, and in our lives, walk away from Christ and/or His Church.

Of course, the Church is made of sinners, including the clergy. And yet, we are as Christians all called to be messengers of the Messiah and His truth, as well as His way of gentleness and patience. We must not let our impatience, or a shortcoming of compassion, break the bruised reed, or quench the smoldering wick, of the injured and weak faith of others.

On this Feast Day of the Baptism of the Lord, we celebrate the beginning of Christ’s mission to redeem and redirect our created world back to the light of the kingdom of heaven. In this is the gift of sight to the spiritually blind, and the release of prisoners from the spiritual slavery of sin, that they may knowingly and freely choose to live out the grace of divine light. 

Of course, it is a tragedy when those who have known this truth instead descend back into the dark blindness of rejecting the truth, or those who have known the exuberant freedom of grace descend back into the captivity to sin. This is the cause for the “New Evangelization,” to re-awaken the Christian faith and conscience in those persons and societies that previously received grace and the Gospel, but have been lured astray by worldly concerns and priorities.

Our role as Christians is to gently and virtuously help them receive again the light of faith from Christ, the source of grace and light, and to help them (encourage them, correct them, accompany them, and intercede for them) to disentangle from the ways of the world. Let us this day celebrate the gift of light we have received, protect it within our hearts, and let it shine generously into the world around us.

Queridas familias y amigos de la parroquia de San Francisco Javier:

“No rompera la caña resquebrajada, ni apagará la mecha que aun humea” (Isaías 42:3)

Este versículo de una de las opciones para nuestra primera lectura de hoy ha estado muy presente en mi corazón durante mucho tiempo. El profeta Isaías predice que la misión del Mesías será mansa y paciente. Ciertamente, Él da la plenitud de la verdad. Y ciertamente vemos a personas en la Biblia y en nuestras vidas alejarse de Cristo y/o de Su Iglesia.

Por supuesto, la Iglesia está formada por pecadores, incluido el clero. Y, sin embargo, todos nosotros, como cristianos, estamos llamados a ser mensajeros del Mesías y Su verdad, así como Su camino de gentileza y paciencia. No debemos permitir que nuestra impaciencia o nuestra falta de compasión quiebren la caña resquebrajada o apaguen la mecha que aún humea de la fe herida y débil de los demás. 

En esta fiesta del Bautismo del Señor, celebramos el comienzo de la misión de Cristo de redimir y redirigir nuestro mundo creado de nuevo a la luz del reino de los cielos. En esto está el don de la vista a los que estan espiritualmente ciegos y la liberación de los prisioneros de la esclavitud espiritual del pecado, para que puedan elegir consciente y libremente vivir la gracia de la luz divina.

Por supuesto, es una tragedia cuando los que han conocido esta verdad en cambio descienden de nuevo a la ceguera oscura de rechazar la verdad, o los que han conocido la exuberante libertad de la gracia descienden de nuevo al cautiverio del pecado. Esta es la causa de la “Nueva Evangelización”, para despertar de nuevo la fe y la conciencia cristiana en aquellas personas y sociedades que anteriormente recibieron la gracia y el Evangelio, pero que han sido extraviadas por las preocupaciones y prioridades mundanas. 

Nuestro papel como cristianos es ayudarlos con dulzura y virtud a recibir nuevamente la luz de la fe de Cristo, la fuente de gracia y luz, y ayudarlos (animarlos, corregirlos, acompañarlos e interceder por ellos) a desenredarse de los caminos del mundo. Celebremos este día el don de la luz que hemos recibido, protejámoslo en nuestros corazones y dejémoslo brillar generosamente en el mundo que nos rodea.
