Following the example of the Holy Family | Siguiendo el ejemplo de la Sagrada Familia

Dear Families and Friends of St. Francis Xavier Parish,

“And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

Our readings today for the Feast of the Holy Family are about attuning your heart to desires and behaviors that build relationships and build peace. That doesn’t mean that there won’t be disagreements, misunderstandings, strong emotions, problems, or other difficulties. It means that you are all on the same side, to solve the difficulties, looking for reconciliation, rendering service toward one another, not setting of factions one against another, side versus side.

Our Lord prayed in his Last Supper that all his disciples, the family and household of the Church, would be One, as the Father and Son are one in the divine love of the Holy Spirit. That we would show each other the selfless, humble love that he showed in the washing of the disciples’ feet and was preparing to show on the cross.

The Church is the Holy Family. We are brothers and sisters of Jesus by our baptism into his life. We have Holy Mary, the virgin mother of many children, our great teacher of virtue in her humble faithful obedience to God. And we have our “foster” father Joseph, whom God has put in authority over his earthly family, to guide, provide, and protect by his unspoken, unhesitating responsiveness to the Word of God, and his role in helping his children learn the beautiful tradition and faith of the people of God. Not because he is more holy than the Incarnate Word and the Immaculate Conception, or worthy of this place. But because it is God’s will to have called him to this loving and self-giving service. And his family honors and respects him, prays for him, loves him, and obeys him, because this is God’s will.

This is the example given to us by the Holy Family, having the purity of heart of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. May our parish family, and each of our parish families, be blessed by the graces of that holy family of Nazareth. Let us pray for, love, and serve one another.

Queridas familias y amigos de la parroquia de San Francisco Javier:

“Y todo lo que digan y todo lo que hagan, háganlo en el nombre del Señor Jesús, dándole gracias a Dios Padre, por medio de Cristo.”

Las lecturas de hoy para la fiesta de la Sagrada Familia tratan de sintonizar su corazón a los deseos y comportamientos que construyen relaciones y construyen la paz. Eso no significa que no habrán desacuerdos, malentendidos, emociones fuertes, problemas u otras dificultades. Significa que todos están del mismo lado, para resolver las dificultades, buscando la reconciliación, prestándose servicio unos a otros, sin crear facciones unos contra otros, bando contra bando.

Nuestro Señor oró en su Última Cena para que todos sus discípulos, la familia y el hogar de la Iglesia, fueran Uno, como el Padre y el Hijo son uno en el amor divino del Espíritu Santo. Que nos mostráramos unos a otros el amor desinteresado y humilde que Él mostró al lavar los pies de los discípulos y que se estaba preparando para mostrar en la cruz.

La Iglesia es la Sagrada Familia. Somos hermanos y hermanas de Jesús por nuestro bautismo en su vida. Tenemos a Santa María, la virgen madre de muchos hijos, nuestra gran maestra de virtud en su humilde y fiel obediencia a Dios. Y tenemos a nuestro padre “adoptivo” José, a quien Dios ha puesto en autoridad sobre su familia terrenal, para guiar, proveer y proteger mediante su respuesta tácita y sin vacilaciones a la Palabra de Dios, y su papel en ayudar a sus hijos a aprender la hermosa tradición y fe del pueblo de Dios. No porque sea más santo que el Verbo Encarnado y la Inmaculada Concepción, o digno de este lugar. Sino porque es la voluntad de Dios haberlo llamado a este servicio amoroso y de entrega. Y su familia lo honra y respeta, ora por él, lo ama y lo obedece, porque esta es la voluntad de Dios.

Este es el ejemplo que nos da la Sagrada Familia, teniendo la pureza de corazón de Jesús, María y José. Que nuestra familia parroquial, y cada una de nuestras familias parroquiales, sean bendecidas por las gracias de esa santa familia de Nazaret. Oremos, amémonos y sirvamos unos a otros
