The Wisdom of the Church

Dear Families and Friends of St. Francis Xavier Parish,

“I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

We can sometimes struggle with some things the Church does, or how or when she does them. You might think that after so much time, that the Church would be better at managing public relations!

After World War II, and the healing ministry needed to help Europe recover, there was an unprecedented cooperation among the denominations of Christianity; ecumenism was blossoming. Churches were working together.

And then into that, in 1950, the Church declares the dogma of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which strained the relations and growing unity between the Church and other denominations. Many criticized that the Catholic Church recklessly shattered the progressing unity.

However, the dogma of the Assumption was defined by the Church at that moment as an essential principle to the rebuilding effort. Communism, socialism, and secular humanism were increasing dangers. The desire to lift up the dignity of humanity was good; but to do so without God as the source of that dignity and guide to the effort would be a disordered disaster (an ancient temptation, the Tower of Babel, rising again from the suffering of Western and Eastern Europe).

The Church, and as an antidote, directed the world’s attention to Mary, whose great honor and glory flow from her humble obedience to the invitation to her place in God’s plan--humanity’s only way of salvation. This was such a vital, counter-cultural message, that the Church declared that all the faithful are obligated to have their faith informed by this truth, rather than risk falling into the false promises of a self-determining, self-saving humanity. The Holy Days of Obligation in the Church are essential for our formation in the fullness of truth.

A veces podemos luchar con algunas cosas que hace la Iglesia, o cómo o cuándo las hace. ¡Usted podría pensar que después de tanto tiempo, la Iglesia sería mejor en el manejo de las relaciones públicas!

Después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial y el ministerio de sanidad necesario para ayudar a Europa a recuperarse, hubo una cooperación sin precedentes entre las denominaciones del cristianismo; florecía el ecumenismo. Las iglesias estaban trabajando juntas.

Y luego en eso, en 1950, la Iglesia declara el dogma de la Asunción de la Santísima Virgen María, que tensó las relaciones y la creciente unidad entre la Iglesia y otras denominaciones. Muchos criticaron que la Iglesia Católica rompiera temerariamente la unidad que avanzaba.
