St. Francis Xavier Christian Youth Organization (CYO)

Welcome to a new year for the Saint Francis Xavier Athletic Association! We are looking forward to another year of healthy activity and Christian fellowship for our youth and families. CYO (Christian Youth Organization) involves students in parish life through athletics. Any student enrolled in the St. Francis Xavier School or St Francis Xavier School of Religious Education, and students who are active members of other parishes that do not offer CYO Basketball, is eligible and encouraged to participate in CYO.

CYO provides our youth with the opportunity to develop new skills, habits, and a great opportunity to enjoy St Francis Xavier Parish.

Again this year, we will offer the following programs: (See tabs below for more information)

  • Biddy Basketball: for boys and girls Pre-K (4's) through 2nd grade.
  • Novice Basketball: for boys and girls in 3rd & 4th grades.
  • Junior Varsity Basketball: for boys and girls in 5th & 6th grades.
  • Varsity Basketball: for boys and girls in 7th & 8th grades.
  • High School Basketball: for high school boys and girls

Biddy Basketball (Pre-K4's-2nd grade)

Biddy Ball is an introductory program open to boys and girls in Pre-K4 thru 2nd grade. This program’s goal is to teach dribbling, shooting, passing, and the very basic structure of the game. The skill building is low key and fun is a big part of the “Fundamentals.” This program starts in early December and runs through early February on Saturday mornings.

Novice Basketball (3rd and 4th grades)

The Intramural program provides more opportunity to build upon basketball skills and is still an introductory program. For this level, following a few weeks of just skill building and learning teamwork, there will be games with other area parish teams. The games are low key, there may or may not be a score kept, the goal for this program is to build skills and a comfort level with the game. Encouragement is the key to success and all players will play equally. This program starts in early December and runs thru early February.

Junior Varsity Basketball (5th & 6th grades)

JV basketball is a continuation of the skill development found in intramurals but at a higher level. Regulation games are played on Saturday and Sundays starting on December first thru mid-February. Attending practice 2 nights a week is expected. Learning is still the priority at this level, but on a more competitive level.

Varsity Basketball (7th & 8th grades)

Varsity Basketball is a competitive level of play. Teams compete for the Deanery/League title. Players are not guaranteed equal playing time at this level. Participation in practice two nights per week is expected of players at this level. Practice begins in October and the season runs thru early February.

Open to students in grades 5 thru 8, cheerleading runs concurrent with the basketball season. The cheer squad cheers at home games and a few away games. Practice is held on weekdays after school.

Starting in late February, volleyball becomes the game of choice for the boys and girls of the St. Francis Xavier parish. The JV and Varsity girls’ volleyball teams have had very successful seasons during the last two years. Attending practice two nights per week is expected. The season is compact, ending by early May.

Boys’ volleyball teams were started by St. Francis and 2 other parish schools in the deanery during the 2013-14 school year. The buzz around this new program has many players looking forward to the third year. This season also goes from late February to the end of April. This program is working on building fundamentals of the game and is a team composed of boys in grades 4-8. The St Francis Xavier Boys Volleyball were league champs during the 2014-15 season.

Novice volleyball is also offered for girls and boys grades 3 and 4. There will be no games with other schools; this is an in-house introduction to the sport.

High School Basketball

High school boys that are active members of St Francis Xavier Parish, or members of an area parish that does not have a basketball program, are eligible to participate. Practice is one or two nights per week, with games on weekends. Practice starts in December, games begin early January and ends mid- February. Registration is due by mid- November for this program. Girls may participate in CYO by joining the combined deanery team.
